Learn How to Defuse a Situation

This is an essential first step to preparing for confrontation and learning how to cool down a situation. Through this course, we aim to give you the tools to help you identify potentially escalating situations and how to calm the situation.

Andy Bershad

Lead Instructor

Andrew Bershad is currently a Detective in the New York City Police Departments Elite Emergency Service Unit (ESU) for 19 years and has over thirty years of experience in the Emergency Medical Services. Andy is one of a dozen active ESU Tactical Medical Team members, and he also serves as their team leader. Detective Bershad is an active REMAC-paramedic currently practicing in New York City, as well as a New York State Department of Health, Bureau of EMS Certified Instructor Coordinator (CIC). Andy is an instructor in the NYPD’s Special Operations Unit where he teaches other Members of ESU in Tactical Medicine and is a recognized expert in tactical law enforcement and tactical medical operations instructing law enforcement agencies nationwide in regards. Additionally, Andy is a Hazardous Materials Technician and Rescue Specialist with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Urban Search and Rescue Team, New York Task Force One, and has deployed both nationally and internationally.

Dennis Canale

Lead Instructor

Dennis Canale is currently a Physician Assistant for 18 years and a retired Second Grade Detective with the New York City Police Departments' Elite Emergency Service Unit (ESU) for over 22 years. Dennis has over 25 years of experience in all aspects of Medical Services. He was the Medical Training Coordinator at the NYPD ESU Specialized Training School, and Lead Tactical Medic and Air Rescue Operations Coordinator for their Tactical Medic Team. Dennis is currently an active Board Certified Physician Assistant practicing for Northwell Health Staten Island University Hospital, credentialed in critical care medicine. As a well-versed instructor, Dennis retains his certifications as an instructor in Tactical Medicine, NAEMT, and the American Heart Association. He has been integral in training hundreds of NYPD officers and other law enforcement personnel in tactical medicine, air rescue medicine, and large-scale medical operations. Dennis was critical in the operation of the NYPD ESU Tactical Medical Team and Air Rescue Specialists. He was considered the lead expert on tactical medical operations in New York City. Additionally, Dennis is a Hazardous Materials Technician and a Rescue Specialist well versed in confined space rescue, water rescue, high angle rescue, and more.
